Safety in Track Riding

The recent growth in the number of track day events is another positive development not only for local motorcycle sports but also for the local motorcycle industry in general.  They not only encourage many speed-hungry riders to ride on the track instead of public roads, but they also improve the skills and attitude of the riders towards safety. P1660909 Our very own IR Track Days plus other events have given opportunities to many adrenaline-charged riders (not racers!) to go fast in a controlled environment without speed restriction.

DSC_5104 A track day is a great way to explore the limits of your motorcycle or scooter and to develop high-performance riding techniques without the danger of vehicular traffic, pedestrians, road hazards, animals and of course, the police. These events also have paramedics and an ambulance on standby. Track days even had instructors and riding marshals who shared riding techniques with you and correct your bad habits. The entry fee was minimal compared to a regular race fee and only basic safety modifications are required for your bike as well as basic safety riding gears. You don’t need a race bike as any bike with good tires, functional brakes and drive train with no fluid leaks will do. It might sound too much for a complete newbie but there’s no substitute to practicing your riding skills on the track.

DSC01008 As you become more secure with your ability and the track environment, you can progress to attending performance riding schools.

20220528_091631 Before attending any track day, you should check your bike, anticipate safety requirements, bring the right tools, food, beverage and other creature comforts like chairs and umbrellas so you can relax and recharge in between sessions.

DSC_5107 Pay attention during the riders’ briefing. Following the rules of the organizer and the track marshals are important for your safety and for you to get the most out of your experience on the track. The night before, make sure you get a good night’s sleep and stay properly hydrated; a clear and relaxed mind is the best way to go fast and safe on the track.

P1660940 Exercise self-control. Resist any temptation to keep pace with faster riders even when you are charged with adrenaline. Ride at your own pace. If you think you’re going too fast or getting fatigued, slow down or exit the track and take a rest.

20220528_092219 The track is not the place to discover any mechanical breakdown on your ride. It’s important to take one warm-up lap and check your bike’s operation specially the brakes. In between sessions you need to periodically check your bike and make sure that the tires, chain, brakes and fuel level are ok. This habit will relieve your constant worry about the bike while you are on track and will allow you to focus more on your riding and increase your enjoyment.
