Sidecars on National Highways Allowed in GCQ and MGCQ Areas

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced in an online briefing on June 4 that sidecars are now allowed on national highways in areas that are under General Community Quarantine and Modified GCQ. This is to address the difficulty in public transportation in those areas.

“Nagkaroon na po ng bagong polisiya, pinapayagan na po ngayon ang mga sidecars sa national highways. Yan po ay para maibsan yung kakulangan ng transportasyon ngayong nag-GCQ na at MGCQ na sa maraming areas,” said Roque.

He also added that LGUs are not allowed to authorize backriding in their cities or municipalities. Motorcycle backriding is prohibited by the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases. Several LGUs have asked the IATF to allow backriding of family members over the past weeks.

“Ang pagbabawal po sa back-ride ay applicable sa GCQ at MGCQ at ito po ay kabahagi ng isang IATF resolution. Hindi po pupuwedeng magbigay ng awtorisasyon ang mga mayor,” Roque expressed.

On June 1, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año suggested that sidecars be attached to motorcycles to be able to travel with a family member. This drew flak from the motorcycle riding public which reiterated that tricycles are not allowed on highways.

Update: On the same day, June 4, Malacañang clarified that tricycles are still prohibited on national highways, retracting its statement earlier.
