At 6 pm today, the eyes of almost every Filipino race fan were glued to their gadgets and smart TVs during the livestream of the 3rd round of the 2021 FIM CEV Repsol Moto2 European Championship Race 1 held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

This is the race that a Filipino will be racing on a Moto2 bike against riders from all over the world, just a step away from the World Championships!

The rider is the young McKinley Kyle Paz of the Yamaha VR46 Master Camp team. Supported by Yamaha Philippines, he became multiple national champion in the Philippines before racing in the Asia Road Racing Championship and becoming the first Filipino FIM ARRC Champion in the UB150 class in 2019. This year, he has been promoted to race in Europe to race in CEV Moto2.

Yesterday, he impressively qualified in 18th position and is eyeing to finish midpack, hopefully in the points.

At the start Kyle can be seen trying to go up the inside in a couple of corners but steadily circulated on a pace just a second slower tha qualifying times. He moved up to P14 after 5 laps and was involved with a battle with another rider for a couple of laps.

He will move up further to 12th place by Lap 9.

When a couple of riders crashed at the front of the field, he was promoted to 11th place by lap 14 and on course for championship points in just his first race! The moment surely sent the hearts of thousands of Filipinos fluttering with excitement!

Then, disaster struck on the next lap when Paz appeared to crash with 4 laps to go. Many Pinoy hearts sank as the screen showed Kyle walking forlornly on the gravel trap. He would eventually be classified in 21st position.

Upon checking with Mr. Jordan Cornista, the crash was clearly not a rider error but a possible gearbox or transmission problem is being investigated by the team. Kyle said he was not able to get it engaged in 3rd gear. He was forced to go to the gravel and had to lay down the bike.

The good news is that Kyle is uninjured and feeling well ready for Race 2 in less than 2 hours later! Mr. Cornista showed a smiling Paz.

Race 2 is at 9 PM Philippine time. You can watch it live here.
