When the M badge and M prefix is bestowed by BMW to its product, it is something serious and expectations are very high.

The M is the highest motorsport and performance marque of the historic Munich company engineered by its M division. It was previously used only on cars for many decades when BMW created models like the M3 and the M5 followed later on by the M1, the M2, the M4 and the M6. These cars are the holy grail to BMW fans and motorsports afficionados. They are normally track oriented and full of performance enhancing technologies. The early cars are now icons and the badge draw a strong performance panache and racing heritage.

The good news is that this same M badge will now appear on its super sports motorcycle as well. The vision is to create iconic motorrad models that, similar to M cars, delivers on its promise of ultimate performance for the road and track.

However, we believe that the M superbike model will be more closer to the racetrack than any of its M cars given the amount of technology that is currently present on its regular models. A stock M BMW Motorrad model will be much closer in terms of power and performance to its world championship race bikes than any of its M cars will ever be relative to actual race cars.

With BMW Motorrad Philippines Director
Mr. Gil Balderas

We were invited to view the first ever unit to be displayed in the Philippines at their new flagship showroom and headquarters in Greenhills. Grouped with the new M3, M4 and M5 automobiles, the new 2021 M 1000 RR was the unquestionably the star and the one with most M substance. It even wears the same livery as its World Superbike racebikes.

BMW’s motorrad division has been steadily growing for the past 15 years and is now a significant contributor in terms of profit and brand equity globally. BMW has been all out in its product offenses lately,  during the pandemic it launched a number of new products such as new F900R and R18 Cruiser.

For the sportbike segment, BMW wants to recapture the revolutionary impact of the first BMW S1000RR introduced in 2008. Originally planned to be produced to satisfy homologation requirements for WSBK racing, it later became a series production model. It was the most powerful motorcycle in its class, and combined with advanced ABS and traction control, it quickly became the best liter sportsbike on sale. This moment completely changed BMW’s brand image and market reach instantly. From 2013 it offered the track oriented HP4 variant.

The S1000RR received a full model change for 2019. The 999 cc four-cylinder engine is entirely new and claimed to produce 204 hp at 13,500 rpm while the whole bike was lightened by a massive 11 kgs to bring it down to only 197kgs!

The bike also received heavily revamped electronics suite of rider aids, including ABS Pro (cornering ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Dynamic Traction Control Wheelie Function, Shift Assistant Pro (which allows for clutchless up and downshifts), Hill Start Control (HSC), Launch Control and Pit Lane Limiter. There are four preset riding modes: “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic” and “Race”, as well as three “Pro” modes, which can be custom tuned and come with a three-stage engine-braking adjustment.

The fuel tank and seat design is slimmer. The front fairing is narrower and more aerodynamic tand now houses twin symmetrical LED headlights, with the intake directly centered at the front for optimum airflow. The instrumentation now uses a 6.5-inch TFT display, which has four preset settings.

For 2021, BMW decided to step away from the traditional HP4 designation and introduce the M Competition package, the first of any BMW motorcycle. This includes motorsport paint finish, M carbon fiber wheels, an M lightweight battery, M Chassis Kit with rear ride height adjustment and swingarm pivot, the M Sport seat and a “Pro” riding mode. The package reduces the weight further to 193.5 kg.

The new M 1000 RR is now the higher-spec variant of the S1000RR. It is intended as a basis for racing but still road legal. The first BMW motorcycle to carry the ‘M’ prefix, the bike has extensive modifications in powerplant, chassis, exhaust and braking. The  fairing  has  aerodynamic winglets that provide downforce.

The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team lead by rider Tom Sykes debuted the new bike for a more serious attack on the series in 2021.

The 2021 M 1000 RR Competition is priced at PhP 2,995,000 and is now available for sale.
