Former ARRC star and race winner Masato “The Chairman” Fernando will race locally on Sunday at the Motul Super Series Nationwide Championships Carmona GP in Carmona for the first time since 2019, the year when he blitz the Asian UB150 underbone racing scene together with teammate McKinley Kyle Paz.
While Paz went on to secure the FIM UB150 title, Fernando was a race winner also and challenged for the crown as well. 2020 saw Paz move up to the Asia 600 Supersports while Fernando was to remain in UB150 as a title favorite. However, this pandemic happened and the 2020 ARRC season was cancelled.
2021 was not any better, even as the FIM and ARRC organizers tried their best efforts to re-start the Asian championships. Unfortunately, it was again unsuccessful as the surge of a new variant and strict travel protocols in Asia prevented it from happening.
While Paz was able to move to Europe and race in European Moto2 under the prestigious Yamaha VR46 Master Camp, Fernando was unfortunately left without any racing action again.
With the announcement that the 2021 ARRC season was again cancelled, Masato decided to reignite his local racing career. Contrary to the wishes of YMPH, who still fully supports him, Masato respectfully asked permission from YMPH Racing bosses if he can leave the ARRC team so he can join a local team and race once again. After a few heartfelt discussions, his wish was eventually granted and he was released.
Meanwhile, a budding local race team, Down South Racing Team or DSRT was looking to level up their organization from a group of friends into a much bigger and more professional race team. The team has been fielding MotoIR SP rider Brendel Belamide for a few races now.
A few weeks ago, DSRT was officially launched in a trackday day at Carmona with Masasto Fernando and Robert RR Espiritu as their main riders together with John Ray Escala and Brendel Belamide.
Fernando and Espiritu will make their racing debut under ZENEOS Racing Team this Sunday at the 2nd round of the 2021 Motul Super Series Nationwide Championships in the VS1 Mototek Super Underbone Open GP class. We were told that the team plans to field both expert riders in the MotoIR1 class as well as in the All Stars race.
Fernando is a multiple Super Series Nationwnide Champion and dominated 2016, 2017 and 2018 before he went to race in ARRC. He became a Golden Wheel Award recipient in 2017 as well. It will be a sweet homecoming for him this Sunday. Now, that is one great thing to look forward to!
