Official Statement from KAGULONG:

We are one with the members of Davao United Delivery Riders Association Inc. whose members are Food Panda Riders from Davao City in their struggle for just pay and condemning the suspension of more than 40 riders for 10 years because they are exercising their right to express their grievances.

Food panda riders turned offline for 2 days and staged a 500 strong unity ride last July 16, 2021 to protest the apps wage policy because they noticed they had been earning less lately from each delivery.

In response, the Food Panda management suspended 30 up to 43 riders as of last Sunday for 10 years instead of recognizing their rider’s queries. According to the management, they can only be reinstated if they cooperate to identify other riders who led and participated in the said protest. This is harassment and intimidation! Instead of addressing the grievance, they employed scare tactics by disconnecting them from the application.

What happened with our brothers and sisters in Davao City clearly manifested the need to investigate the gig workers current employment status to ensure just pay, benefits and job security.

We call on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately intervene and investigate on this matter. We are also calling on the DOLE to deliver its commitment to convene the Technical Working Group represented by rider’s groups, trade union, worker’s organization and government agencies concern to start the research and investigation that would lead to creating policy standards to protect the gig workers.

The gig workers need immediate attention for us to repay their gratitude in delivering our needs to our homes. They served as front liners and movers of the economy during pandemic. They deserved to be treated as heroes and not slaves of the apps.

RESPECT GIG WORKERS RIGHTS!
REINSTATE THE SUSPENDED FOOD PANDA RIDERS IN DAVAO CITY NOW!
