Masato Fernando: The Chairman, Who Else?

There’s something so right about giving awards to people who are humble. You feel that they really deserve the recognition. Such is the case for racer Masato Fernando.

The 22-year-old Bulakeño is another racer who started out rather late but has proven that greatness is not in the years you’ve been riding/competing, rather in what you have made out of those few years. Sheer determination, discipline, perhaps a stroke of luck, are what did it for “Sato”. Currently, he leads Maico Buncio in their tight race to the top of the 150cc Open class podium of the UBK.

After winning heat 2 of his Open 4-stroke race in Antipolo for the second season of the SK Invitational, we met, hoping to know a little more about “The Chairman”.

IR: How old were you when you learned how to ride the motorcycle?

MF: Nagsimula po ako nung 2005 at 17 years old ako  pero leisure rider lang po ako noon, ang hilig ko lang po ay mag-ride sa highway. Nung time na yun, hindi pa ako nakakapanood ng races. Nung may nagpa-race sa Meycauayan, sumali po ako. Scooter pa po ang uso noon at Jog ang gamit ng mga riders. First time ko pong sumali at sinuwerteng nag-champion agad ako. Pagkatapos nun, nag-try po ako sa underbone sa 110 Super Stock sa SK Invitational na ginanap sa Club Manila East. Yun po ang first underbone competition ko at nanalo naman po ako. Sa tatlong karera ko po, naipanalo ko yung dalawa. Dito (Ynares Center) na po ako na-discover kasi kada karera po lagi akong champion. Dito na rin po nagka-interes yung mga sponsors na hanggang ngayon po ay tumutulong pa rin sa akin.

IR: How do you prepare for a race?

MF: Disiplina lang po sa sarili, tulog ng maaga at practice. Syempre ang engine,
kailangang ayusin talaga. Ito po ang mga ginagawa naming paghahanda dahil medyo dikit po ang score namin ni Maico sa 150 Open (UBK). Sa ngayon po ay talagang naka-focus ako sa motor. Balak ko din pong bumalik sa school pagkatapos po nitong season na ‘to kasi sayang din naman po yung pinaghandaan namin. Pag nakuha po namin itong UBK, first time ko po makukuha dahil puro runner-up lang po ako nung mga nakaraang taon.

IR: What do you consider to be your biggest win?

MF: Para sa akin po ay nung nakalaban ko po si Maico. Masaya po ako nun dahil nakabakbakan ko siya. Alam naman po natin na si Maico ay isa sa pinakamagagaling dito sa Pilipinas. Yun pong laban naming yun sa BRC ang pinakamasarap para sa akin. Pero maraming beses na rin naman po kaming naglaban.

IR: Any last words for our readers?
