As a boy who went on vacation to his province Capiz, Jun Reyes of Project 4, Quezon City fell in love with motorcycles at a very young age. Then at 14 years old, he stayed in Roxas City – the capital city of the province – and saw how people regarded bikes as the best and most enjoyable means of transportation.

Motorcycles were so common that his relatives owned not one, but three – a Kawasaki Ninja AR80, a Yamaha DT and a Honda TMX. He used to borrow from them to roam around and visit different places in his province. During times when he wasn’t allowed to use them, he would secretly sneak one out. This is where his enthusiasm for motorcycles and his dream of having one of his own someday began. Some years later, Reyes was stunned and amazed upon laying his eyes on a Yamaha FZ16 for the first time on the street. He had promised himself then that he would get something like that; but as he wanted to be unique, he instead opted to buy his current baby – a 2012 Yamaha FZ-S PG2 153cc. He has taken this bike on long and short rides and has traveled thousands of kilometers on it, but he is still yet to complain. To Jun, the handling and power of this bike is really amazing but although that’s already the case, he still decided to make some improvements to make the machine faster and better. He was determined to turn his bike’s modification into a project – one he was sure would give him satisfaction once completed.

FZ-S is an improvisation upon the older FZ-16 model in that it comes with minor changes like an aerodynamic windshield, a longer pillion seat which is also relatively wider, a chain protector and a wider rear fender. That being said, none of these improvements would actually have a big effect on the bike’s mileage since the engine has been kept practically the same. To have the machine respond to its rider’s needs, Jun had it customized based on all the specifications he had in mind. First, he upgraded the lightings. This is especially important when you have to ride at night with safety as your utmost priority. He installed a T10 projector park light, an HID 6000-Kelvin Hi/Lo kit and a snail horn Bosch EC6 with a relay for safety. Then to increase torque and top end power especially during mountain riding, he replaced the sprocket set and installed a 15/44 combination with a longer gold chain and a stock combination of 14/40. Next, he installed an Apido 300 mm big disc on the front brakes with a petal disc designed Daytona CNC aluminum bracket to have better braking power and to dissipate heat more effectively. Reyes also ordered a 200cc bore up kit from Kawahara.

This presented a bit of a challenge as he had to find someone who could install the kit perfectly. After some research he finally found Doc Bert Mora, the racer mechanic of PIMP. Working on the kit perfectly, on his first run after this modification there was a noticeably huge difference in sound, torque and speed. Reyes replaced the carburetor with a bigger one as well – a Koso 30mm flat slide racing carburetor. He added a KTC quick throttle with switches, a K&N fuel filter with magnet and Hurricane cone type air filter. He made many other changes like using an HGM Teardrop full exhaust, installing a Pitsbike Racing CDI for more peak power, using racing clutch springs and upgrading the primary driven gear (for better power transfer to the ground). He also installed new tires and chose a Shinko Verge Radial tire (160/60/17 on the rear and 120/70/17 up front). This gave him more confidence in turning corners. The power his bike now possesses surely isn’t like the stock Yamaha FZ anymore.

ADDITIONAL BIKE MODIFICATIONS ON BLACK MAMBA:
Jun installed a racing ignition coil, 9 power plug and go, NGK iridium spark plug, Pro Taper handlebar, hand guards, Moxi adjustable levers, two LED fog lamps, hazard switch, Koso volt meter, UMA crank case breather, Racing Boy chain tensioner, Euro blade side mirrors and a custom-made touring bracket. Also, Givi E21 side boxes and a 48-liter Shad top box with blinkers were added to make Black Mamba a fully set-up touring bike. Even after all these, Jun feels that his motorcycle still lacks a few things here and there. He is still searching for the best racing cam that he can put his hands on, as well as a rear disc conversion and an aluminum swing arm. Once he completes all these, he is very determined to join a bike show so that the world would finally see the fruits of his labor and passion. All the money that he has spent in modifying his bike has been worth it. He also said, “It’s really exciting to see the changes I’ve made with my bike, and also the looks that it gets from the people who see it. The amazement on their faces is simply priceless.
