Yamaha V80 Hardtail Beach Cruiser Custom Cub

This Yamaha V80 hardtail beach cruiser custom cub is conceptualized and designed by Ryan Tigley, a custom motorcycle enthusiast/builder connected with Gulf Oil International Singapore.
We have featured his bikes before such the Kawasaki KE 100 Scrambler and unforgettable motorized Schwinn classic bike turned into a custom board-track racer. One of his latest creations is the V80 hardtail beach cruiser custom cub.
“This project is about making something different out of the most common type of bikes in our country. It is an old two-stroke underbone cub customized into a hardtail, beach-cruiser bike that you can ride slowly and enjoy every bit of moment that you are on it. When people talk about retro-style bikes, most would only think about Café Racers, Scramblers, Choppers and Trackers. But we can also make use of the most common bikes around us and that is the underbone “cub” motorcycle. We wanted to showcase that a humble cub can also be a customizable (retro-style) project,” Ryan said.
Ryan got the V80 cub from Renato Ouano, an avid scooter/underbone collector who is also trading new/used parts. He is well known among the Yamaha V50 and Honda cub FB groups. For this project, Ryan collaborated with Moses Babiera of Garahe Ni Moymoy based in Lapu-Lapu City and CebuA low key, a custom bike builder that mostly does scooter modifications. He has been building custom-retro cubs for a few years now and made quite a handful of beautiful projects.
Ryan started with a sketch about his vision for the project and discussed it with Moses Babiera. From there, it was a step-by-step process building the different sections of the cub. “There are no perfect parts, but it is in seeing all these imperfections come together and combining them to make the perfect project. That would be for me, the most satisfying aspect. There were a lot of challenges during the build such as getting wide tires/rims fit the stock frame. We did a mock-up and adjusted the rim distance to the frame for the best fit. We also had to chop and expand the forks. To get a lower and extended stance, we had to cut the frame and stretched the rake angle. The trickiest part of the build was the fabrication and fitting of the handlebar adaptor as I insisted on retaining a leg shield. The bike had a ocked-up engine; luckily, we found a donor bike shipped from Cagayan de Oro that we had cannibalized. It is not every day that you can see a hardtail cub. Just by looking at the bike, you can already imagine the nice and slow ride in the coastal roads or in the beach. The chill aura of the bike would really remind you to stop thinking about stress and that you need a vacation, the sea breeze in your face and the smell of total relaxation. The first time I rolled on it and went to Café Racer-Cebu, two foreigner bikers could not help it and approached me to ask about the bike. The bike can really start a conversation and in doing so, you make friends. Seeing strangers putting smile on their faces and random people stopping to snap a “selfie” when you park the bike really bring joy and satisfaction,” shared Ryan.
“There are a few people I would like to thank. First and foremost, that would be my wife, for supporting me in this endeavor, then my son for inspiring me as I am planning to keep this for his 18th birthday, I need to wait 15 more years for that, Garahe ni Moymoy for doing a great job and all the vendors who supplied and helped me get the correct items. I really appreciate the vendors who go out of their way and explain the compatibility in terms of fitment with other motorcycle parts. A big thank you again to my family, my wife Sheryl and my son Schemuel Ryaile. Thank you so much InsideRACING Magazine for featuring my latest build project,” Ryan expressed.
